Messenger Service

Messenger Service Popup Advertising - I despise spammers and the messages they send. The latest trend is using the messenger service to send pop up advertising spam to unprotected computers. It's important to note that these messages have no relation to MSN or Microsoft Messenger.

Microsoft Java Virtual Machine - A few years ago Microsoft and Sun went head to head in the courts over Java and who was entitled to use it in what situations. To say it was a boring case would be an understatement. The bottom line was that Microsoft agreed to a limited timeframe in which it would continue to use the Sun source code. See, you're bored with this already, aren't you? Here are a few frequently asked questions regarding Java and Windows XP.

Minimize Outlook 2002 to the System Tray - If you frequently access Outlook during the day it’s more convenient to have it minimized to the system tray rather than invoking it each time you need to send/receive e-mail.

MS-DOS Startup Disk - A MS-DOS startup disk is not a substitute for the boot disks that you might be familiar with from Windows 95/98/Me. It performs one function and one function only. It gets you to the A:\ prompt from a cold boot.

Msocache Folder - Quite a few users have asked about a new hidden folder mysteriously appearing on their systems named Msocache. It's related to Microsoft Office 2003 and contains the install source files from the Microsoft Office 2003 installation CD.

MUP.SYS - If your computer hangs at startup or returns a mup.sys error, many readers have reported it being linked to USB 2.0 add-in cards. Try removing the card (along with other PCI cards, if necessary) and see if it resolves the problem.

-  Important Information  -
The Elder Geek on Windows XP site contains many articles and suggestions for modifying the Windows XP operating system. I've tried these tweaks and tips on many systems. Sometimes they work, sometimes not. The point is, ensure you have a current, tested backup of all system and data files and understand how to restore the system in case something goes very wrong. You can still yell at me, but I assume no responsibility for your actions and use of the information and disclaim any legal responsibility for any consequences of such actions.
