We've come to a
fork in the slipstreaming road; if you want only SP1a
included in the slipstreamed CD then skip to the end of this
article and continue with the section called
Step 11 -
Extract The Imaging File. If you want to include the
recently released Update Rollup as part of the slipstreamed
CD, continue on to the next section.
Slipstreaming
the Microsoft Rollup Update
| Before making a decision to
incorporate the Rollup Update into a
slipstreamed CD I suggest reading the
Update Rollup 1 for Windows XP Is Available
article. It lists the critical updates included
in the rollup as well as a [More Information]
section that should be read before deciding
whether you want the updates slipstreamed or to
obtain them via Windows Update. For the amount
of trouble involved in adding the Rollup I'd
just grab it from Windows Update since it's so
small in size, but it's your decision. |
Microsoft recently released an
item called the Rollup Update that can also be included in
the slipstream process. What's an Update Rollup? Basically,
it's just another compilation of updates and fixes that
isn't nearly as convenient to slipstream as a Service Pack.
It's beyond me why Microsoft decided to
release an Update Rollup rather than Service Pack 2. It complicates matters for those that like to create
slipstreamed CD's but there isn't any real magic to
incorporating the rollup other than the annoyance factor of
having to learn one more procedure that could have been
avoided by a Service Pack release. My guess is that
Microsoft wanted more users to make use of Windows Update
since there certainly isn't any shortage of updates that could
have been used for SP2,
but as Dennis Miller likes to say, "I could be wrong."
For a better understanding of why all the
following nonsense is necessary to slipstream an Update
Rollup, I'd suggest reading the Knowledge Base article
How to Slipstream
Hotfixes That Replace Pre-Existing Driver Files [KB814847]. The
procedure below is based directly on that article and I'm
going to reference sections of it during the tutorial. You may find it convenient to print it out so it's
available for
reference. It will aid in understanding the
processes.
Chances are good that if you're interested
in slipstreaming the rollup you already have a slipstreamed
XP/SP1a CD in your possession. If not, you'll need to start
from here and then return to this page when the XP/SP1a CD
is completed.
| Suggestion - If you decide to
go ahead with the next section and slipstream
the Rollup Update, I'd suggest you make a backup
copy of the C:\XP directory that contains all
the work accomplished in Steps 1 - 4 before
proceeding. If an error does occur during the
next section it will provide a convenient recovery
point. |
